Results From Bord Gais Energy Leinster U-21 HC Q/Finals
The quarter-finals of the Bord Gais Energy Leinster Under 21 Hurling Championship were held this evening (Wed. 31st May), and the results were:
Kilkenny 0-21, Dublin 0-16
Wexford 4-21, Offaly 2-9
Carlow 1-21, Kildare 2-14
Westmeath 1-20, Laois 0-21 (a.e.t.)
The biggest drama of the evening was in TEG Cusack Park, where Westmeath salvaged extra-time with a last-gasp goal from Ciaran Doyle. Incidentally, it was Ciaran’s twin brother Killian who almost secured a draw for the Westmeath senior hurlers last Saturday evening, with an injury-time goal versus Offaly. After 60 minutes, the scoreboard read Westmeath 1-13, Laois 0-16.
This result sets up a repeat of last year’s quarter-final, when Westmeath sensationally defeated Kilkenny. The Cats ousted reigning champions Dublin by five points at Nowlan Park, having led for most of the hour.
Elsewhere, Carlow edged past Kildare at St Conleth’s Park, Newbridge, by three points. The sides had been level at 1-9 apiece at the interval. And Wexford proved too strong for Offaly, hitting three second half goals to stretch a three point half time lead (1-10 to 2-4) to advance with 18 points to spare.
The semi-finals – Carlow v Wexford; Westmeath v Kilkenny – will take place on Wednesday evening, 21st June, with the final pencilled in for Wednesday, 5th July.
