Top Oil Senior A Hurling Up and Running

December 14th, 2018

This week saw the Top Oil Senior A Hurling Championship kick off in earnest with a full suite of games down to be decided. The last of these took place today in Rathnesika after being postponed from earlier in the week.

Reigning Champions Dublin North got their title defence of to the perfect start beating St Brendans of Birr in the opening game. The Champions were made to work every step of the way for the victory as the Offaly men eventually succumbed to a 2 point deficit. The Dublin side will be hoping that this can set them up for another great run in this year’s Championship.

St. Kierans College of Kilkenny faced off against Good Counsel of Wexford in their first round game. The Kilkenny side were keen to make amends for a recent loss in the League Final and lay down a marker for the year ahead. This they most certainly did running out comprehensive winners on a score-line of 3-20 to 1-10. Inter County Minor star Conor Kelly was to the fore as he finished the day with a personal tally of 1-08. This sets the traditional power house up nicely for Round 2.

Next up saw Borris V.S of Carlow take on Wexford Towns St Peter’s. The Slaney Siders ran into an early lead from which they never looked back. The half time score left them 12 points up. This leads proved too much for Borris to overcome despite fighting valiantly in the remainder of the second half they would eventually lose out 3-18 to 1-10.

The final game of Round 1 took place today with the clash of Coláiste Eoin and Kilkenny CBS. The Kilkenny side fresh from their League success were hoping to arrive in a similar vein of form. However a strong wind and even stronger Coláiste Eoin side saw them trail at the break by 9 points. A serious comeback and change in the elements almost saw the Dublin side being piped at the post. In the end the held on for a deserved victory by 6 points and remain the last dual Senior A school in both Competitions.
