Scenarios, Tables & Semi-Final Arrangements In Bord Na Móna Competitions

January 3rd, 2018

All counties except Wexford have a mathematical chance of qualifying for the semi-finals of this year’s Bord na Móna O’Byrne Cup, ahead of the final round of group games this Sunday.

And while several counties still cannot be ruled out of a place in the penultimate round of the Bord na Móna Walsh Cup, it’s looking good for Wexford, Kilkenny, Dublin and either Offaly or Westmeath.

If two teams are tied at the top of the table, the outcome of the game between them decides which of them goes through. If three or more teams tie for qualifying positions, score difference will decide. And there could yet be a free-taking competition to decide which teams progress from Group 4 in both codes! (See below)

Offaly footballers will hope that Wexford provide strong resistance to Dublin at Enniscorthy, as scoring difference could yet prove crucial in Group 1 of the Bord na Móna O’Byrne Cup.

In Group 2, Longford can afford a narrow loss to Kildare and still sneak through, whereas the Lilywhites would need to win by at least ten points. Meath require a draw at home to Wicklow to dislodge Carlow from top spot in Group 3, while a draw would also suffice for Westmeath versus Laois in the two team Group 4.

In the Bord na Móna Walsh Cup, Kilkenny (Group 2) and Dublin (Group 3) already have the benefit of a comprehensive first round win, while Wexford (Group 1) will be expected to make it two wins out of two against Wicklow.

Similar to the footballers, Westmeath could be faced with a closely-fought battle to progress to the semi-finals when they take on Offaly at TEG Cusack Park.

The pairings for the Bord na Móna O’Byrne Cup semi-finals on Sunday, 14th January, are as follows:

Carlow/Meath/Wicklow (2.00): Carlow/Meath/Wicklow v Kildare/Longford/Louth

Laois/Westmeath (2.00): Laois/Westmeath v Dublin/Offaly

The final will be held at O’Moore Park, Portlaoise, on Sunday, 21st January at 4pm (weather permitting) as a double-header with an AIB All-Ireland Intermediate Club semi-final, and will be broadcast live on TG4.

In Group 4 of the hurling and football, if the counties are level on aggregate score at the end of normal time, extra-time of ten minutes each way will be held. If level after extra-time, a free-taking competition will decide the outcome, arranged as follows:

Each team will nominate five players

Frees will be taken by each of the five players from a position of their choosing on the 45 meter line in Football and 65 meter line in Hurling

Frees in football may be taken from the hands or off the ground.

Frees will be taken for points only with no goalkeeper/defenders facing the free takers.

The game is awarded to whichever team scores more of their five frees

If still level then sudden death frees will be taken using the same five players in order

The sudden death element will continue until such time as there is definite outcome.
